Edgar Wright's Grindhouse "Don't" Trailer

I was finally able to catch Wright's HOT FUZZ over the weekend and I highly recommend it! Even more funny and over-the-top than Shaun of the Dead. I just found out that Edgar Wright did one of the fake trailers in Grindhouse. His was the hilarious "DON'T".

Danny Boyle's SUNSHINE Advance Screening...

I was able to catch an early screening for "SUNSHINE" last night. This is the new film from director Danny Boyle and writer Alex Garland. I'm a HUGE fan of "28 Days Later", which these two previously teamed up for as well. As I mentioned way back in January, I was eager to see how Boyle would do a sci fi movie. I will say that he did a pretty good job. Lots of great space visuals, sounds, good dialogue, and an almost perfect cast...I'll come back to this. When you first read the plot of this film, I think alot of us automatically thought about that movie Armageddon. Basically yes, for most of the movie, this could be considered a smarter "Armageddon","Deep Impact", or "The Core". While watching it though, you are of course reminded of "2001","Solaris",or even "Alien" at times. The special effects in this are top notch and really make you feel like you're right there in the ship or floating along side it. Now, as far as the cast goes, it was 99% complete for me. For some reason Chris Evans, who plays the character Mace here, and Johnny Storm in the Fantastic Four movies, doesn't fit in the mix for me. I can't really pinpoint why, but he didn't seem natural for the part. As for the last part of the film, I knew there had to be some kind of plot twist coming up, but I wasn't really expecting the one that is thrown at us. I'll say that the writer Alex Garland is pretty much to blame for this. For me, it pretty much ruins the spectacular movie that it was in the beginning. I am not saying that it is not worth seeing at all. But I just wish that they would of come up with something a little more original and less Hollywood.
Watch a great video below of Boyle and others talking about how they filmed in and out of the space suits.

Frontiers Movie

I am really looking forward to this. Unfortunately I will have to wait quite a while to see if there will even be an english subtitled version available over here. The French-Swiss horror-thriller Frontier(s) will be theatrically released in France on January 9th of next year. "While an extreme right-wing candidate advances to the second ballot of the presidential election, a group of young armed robbers holes up in a backwoods inn. The inn is located in an old mining wasteland, and its managers are a particularly sordid lot [to wit, (neo-)Nazi cannibals]." Visit Gomorrahy for trailers and movie stills! Watch a trailer and see why I am excited for this. BR-Films is behind this one and that can only be a good thing. I raved about them last year. Thanks to Twitchfilm for the heads up.

Oldboy Cho Seung-Hui

Oh come on! I think they are really stretching here. Some are saying that a few of the pics that the idiot Cho Seung-Hui sent to NBC, look similar to the cover of Park Chan-Wook's bloody, revenge tale, "Oldboy". "The inspiration for perhaps the most inexplicable image in the set that Cho Seung-Hui mailed to NBC news on Monday may be a movie from South Korea that won the Gran Prix prize at Cannes Film Festival in 2004.
The poses in the two images are similar, and the plot of the movie, “Oldboy,” seems dark enough to merit at least some further study. Following is The Times’s plot summary:
'The film centers on a seemingly ordinary businessman, Dae-su (the terrific Choi Min-sik), who, after being mysteriously imprisoned, goes on an extensive, exhausting rampage, seeking answers and all manner of bloody revenge.'
In a Times review, Manohla Dargis wrote that the film’s 'body count and sadistic violence' mostly appealed to 'cult-film aficionados for whom distinctions between high art and low are unknown, unrecognized and certainly unwelcome."-Hollywood Reporter Blog

Rob Zombie's Halloween Trailer

Set to be released on August 31st. Head over to Yahoo to view the trailer for yet another rendition of HALLOWEEN!(9th one to be exact) Click Here to view.

"his plans call for a whole new beginning to the franchise with no connections to the previous films. While the intent is to make a new version of the film, Rob Zombie has made it clear that the Michael Myers mask and theme music will remain.[2] Recently Zombie has seen the mask and claims that "It looks perfect. exactly like the original. Not since 1978 has The Shape looked so good".[3] Apparently, John Carpenter has given his blessing to Rob Zombie.[4] Malek Akkad will assist in producing, replacing Moustapha Akkad, his deceased father."-Wikipedia

HOSTEL 2 and CAPTIVITY Poster Bans

First we have the new, touched up and MPAA approved poster for HOSTEL 2. The original features a topless girl holding a severed head, obviously not approved.
Click here to see the un-edited HOSTEL 2 movie poster.--------------------------------------------------

Now we have the poster from the new movie, CAPTIVITY, starring Elisha Cuthbert?!
Apparently the original poster was too graphic and are being taken down. "In the wake of a public outcry against Los Angeles billboards and New York taxicab tops advertising the upcoming movie "Captivity" with images of the abduction, torture and death of a young woman, After Dark Films said it will take down the offending ads by 2 p.m. today."--"Lionsgate said Monday that it had no involvement with the ads, which were produced by Art Machine Digital, and that all the marketing for the movie had been handled solely by After Dark."--"Read more of the story at Hollywood Reporter.

Frank Miller's "300" Results and Disputes

Seen it yet? I still haven't! Waiting to get a free night to see it at an IMAX screen. Opening Weekend Results for 300:$70,885,301--Highest grossing film ever released in the month of March, and the third highest in the rated R category(behind Matrix Reloaded and The Passion of the Christ).

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
"The battle of Thermopylae was real, but how real is 300? Ephraim Lytle, assistant professor of hellenistic history at the University of Toronto, has seen the movie and offers his view: And had Leonidas undergone the agoge, he would have come of age not by slaying a wolf, but by murdering unarmed helots in a rite known as the Crypteia."--

"300's Persians are ahistorical monsters and freaks. Xerxes is eight feet tall, clad chiefly in body piercings and garishly made up, but not disfigured. No need – it is strongly implied Xerxes is homosexual which, in the moral universe of 300, qualifies him for special freakhood. This is ironic given that pederasty was an obligatory part of a Spartan's education. This was a frequent target of Athenian comedy, wherein the verb "to Spartanize" meant "to bugger." In 300, Greek pederasty is, naturally, Athenian."--

"This moral universe would have appeared as bizarre to ancient Greeks as it does to modern historians. Most Greeks would have traded their homes in Athens for hovels in Sparta about as willingly as I would trade my apartment in Toronto for a condo in Pyongyang."-From Star.com

Scorsese's next film and more...

Image Hosted by ImageShack.usMartin's next film is entitled "The Long Play" and it will be about two friends in the music business: it will "highlight the rise and fall of musical genres along the way, touching on everything from the salad days of R&B to rock and up through contemporary hip-hop."--"William Monahan, the screenwriter of "The Departed," will rewrite the screenplay; Mick Jagger ( will coproduce." -IFC

Variety has reported that director Darren Lynn Bousman(Saw 2,3,and 4)will be doing his take on David Cronenberg's "Scanners". Hmmm-this could be bad.

Variety has also announced Danny Boyle's next film already.Image Hosted by ImageShack.us Sunshine isn't even out yet.

"Ponte Tower" will be shot entirely in one of the tallest skyscrapers in Africa: "The 54-storey cylindrical Ponte Tower in Johannesburg, South Africa, was considered one of the city's most desirable addresses and a powerful symbol of white affluence under apartheid when it was built in 1975. Local papers even dubbed it "heaven on earth."
"But despite breathtaking views the hulking urban landmark disintegrated into a wind-ravaged hellhole infected by gangs, guns and drugs likened by some to the Tower of Babel."

Smokin' Aces...

smokin' aces

Well back in November I had posted about this going to be a guy ritchie-esque gangster type movie. I was wrong-Kind of. I had been anticipating this to be balls to the wall-nonstop-action from beginning to end. It seemed to move really slow the first thirty minutes. By no means am I saying that this was a bad movie though. It's a definate top-notch crime-comedy mashup. Director Joe Carnahan borrows elements of Ritchie and Tarantino flicks, but does it well. A great quote I saw on it: "It's like True Romance crossed with Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels remade with the artistic vision of Domino." The cast shines bright for sure. Jeremy Pivon's coked out character was excellent and Cameo's acting debut was superb. Ryan Reynolds and Ray Liotta give great performances playing their FBI agent characters. No surprise with Liotta, but I was wondering how Reynolds would be.
Even though we are only a month in-this will go into my Top Ten of the Year. Let's see if it can stay there another eleven months. I'll leave another quote I found on it: "Isn't this grown-up? In a word, no, and that's what's so much fun about it."

Pick up Joe Carnahan's NARC in our store.

SUNDANCE FEST...

First though, here is what IFC had to say at their blog: "We saw few bad films and no thrilling ones; given that we stuck mostly to films in the dramatic competition, the overall quality of what we saw was both very impressive and depressingly practical-minded. Most films had one or two bankable stars, and most kept to safe storytelling territory — it's indicative of the current state of indie film that most of the titles we came across seemed to have been created with specialty distribution divisions in mind — there a Fox Searchlight, here a Lionsgate."

The entire list of winners can be seen HERE in a pdf format.

RANDOM REVIEWS:

CHAPTER 27 where Jared Leto plays John Lennon's murderer: "The film creates more questions than it provides answers, Instead the film accurately portrays the events leading up to the murder, most of which are historically interesting but not in the least visually entertaining. The film crawls by at a snail’s pace, only picking up speed when Lennon arrives."-/film

BLACK SNAKE MOAN: "Why does Justin Timberlake want to be an actor? Does he know that screaming really loud doesn’t necessarily translate into a great performance?"--"If you were to look up “Sophomore effort” in a dictionary, I’m sure Black Snake Moan would be listed as an example. The poster and advertising promises something the movie never truly delivers. You will leave the theater unsatisfied, wanting and needing more."-/film

Crispin Glover's EVERYTHING IS FINE: "I don't know whether he be pleased to know that only 11 souls walked out in the course of things. The survivors seemed more enthused. Although the film is an assault on the sensibilities of the average filmgoer, more hardened cinephiles will find he has crafted a considerably more linear film. Although riddled with ludicrous situations and outrageous moments the movie is true to itself and has the redeeming feature of a gut-punch of an ending."-eyeforfilm

Now I'll be honest- I was not a huge fan of Willard, among others, but Glover strikes me as a really interesting person and I am certainly looking forward to seeing EIF. (How about him playing Warhol in The Doors!)

This Night I'll Possess Your Little Miss Sunshine

Tonight I'll Possess Your Little Miss Sunshine

So this weekend I was able to catch two movies: The wild and weird "This Night I'll Possess Your Corpse" and the wonderful "Little Miss Sunshine". First we will start with TNIPYC. I caught this thanks to IFC's Grind House friday night flicks. This is the second installment of the "Coffin Joe" Series, the first being "AT MIDNIGHT I'LL TAKE YOUR SOUL". Director José Mojica Marins directs and stars in this 1966 grind house horror film. Shot entirely in B&W except for a pretty disturbing hell sequence: "Marin reportedly used electric shocks to make the writhing pain of the actors appear all the more real." If you're a fan of these types of grind house/campy horror films, then there is plenty to like here: women, snakes, spiders, demons, sadism, immorality, and twisted philosophy!

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Now for something entirely different, we have "Little Miss Sunshine". This was a great movie with lots of laughs and heart. If watched just for the fact that Steve Carell is in the film, I don't think most will be that happy. He is hardly the star of the movie, but definately gives a good performance. The little actress Abigail Breslin, who made her first movie appearance in Signs, steals the show for sure. "What happens when you stuff a failed motivation speaker, his wife, the nation's number one Proust scholar, an elderly potty-mouthed heroin addict, a teen who’s mute by choice, and a bespectacled little pageant hopeful into a mini VW bus for a three day road trip? You get this hilarious but moving satire about a dysfunctional family obsessed with winning."

Here are some interesting facts thanks to wikipedia:
"Although the role of the suicidal uncle was originally written for Bill Murray and there was studio pressure for Robin Williams, the part eventually went to Steve Carell."

"Steve Carell, at the time he was cast for Little Miss Sunshine, was a relative unknown in Hollywood. According to an article in Entertainment Weekly,[15] the producers of the film worried that he wasn't a big enough star and didn't have much acting experience. However, between the time the film was shot in the summer of 2005 and its release in the summer of 2006, Carell became a huge success as the star of the high-grossing film The 40-Year-Old Virgin in August 2005 and the leading character of the popular NBC Emmy-winning television series The Office, which premiered in March 2005 and for which Carell won a Golden Globe in 2006 for best lead actor in a comedy television series. In the span of just one year, Carell had become such a star that the producers had gone from protesting his casting to tapping him to do prominent promotion for the film."

Ghost In The Shell Live Action...

GHOST IN THE SHELL

According to Animenewsnetwork there is a live action version of the popular Ghost in the Shell anime in the works from Production I.G.
"Negotiations with American entertainment companies have not been a strong point for Japanese Anime and Film studios in the past. However, hopes are high that a project involving Ghost in the Shell would be more successful due to the significant number of people in the American film business who are fans of the series. The size of the North American fanbase for Ghost in the Shell is also a factor.

As the producers of the original Ghost in the Shell manga by Shirow Masamune, Kodansha still retains rights to the series. Production I.G. produced the feature length anime films Ghost in the Shell and Innocence: Ghost in the Shell, as well as the Stand Alone Complex TV Series. According to the new contract with Kodansha, Production I.G. will represent the creators of the original work and other involved parties in negotiations for distribution of the Live-Action Ghost in the Shell and all other activities involved with production of the film."
